good morning. breaking overnight. a gunman walks into new jersey's largest mall and opens fire. hundreds of shoppers in lockdown for hours. this morning, the shooter is dead as police investigate his troubled past. voters head to the polls across the country. two big races may be the preview of the white house in 2016. and an nbc exclusive, the terrifying midair collision of two sky diving planes captured as it happens as cameras mounted on the divers' helmets. one plane ripping apart seconds after the miraculous escape. and they'll join us live today, tuesday, november 5th, 2013.

terrifying night out here. there were thousands of people in the mall behind me when a gunman opened fire. at 3:20 in the morning, police found the body of a gunman in a difficult part of the mall to reach. he had a self-inflicted gun shot wound in his head. >> new jersey's garden state mall is a suburban shopper's paradise, more than 300 stores, household names. 300 stores, household names. last night hundreds of police responded to the nightmarish 911 report of a gunman stalking the mall and opening fire. >> we heard shots and we thought there were fireworks at first and then we saw someone walking by who looked armored in something like a motorcycle helmet and vest. >> reporter: police identified the gunman at 20-year-old richard shoop, unemployed from a nearby town and said he carried a modified rifle that looked like an ak-47. a legal weapon he had stolen from his brother. police said the gunman had the opportunity to shoot at people

in the mall but didn't and that he fired at least six times. some witnesses said they came face to face with him. >> he just walked past and waved at me with his ak-47 and i was like, wow, god was with me because he could have shot me right there. >> reporter: inside, confusion and chaos as many fled and escaped while some store managers barricaded themselves and their customers inside. >> we went in and got into the bathroom and locked the door and we sat there for over three hours waiting because they said don't come out. don't make any noises. >> reporter: it's a huge mall. 2.5 million square feet of space. his body was found in an area behind a part of the mall under construction. >> he does have a drug history. he has used drugs but what possessed him to do tonight what he did, no one can really say. >> reporter: police believe the gunman, shoop, acted alone.

they have been going through every inch of the mall to make sure that it's safe. it will not open today or until further notice. everyone is breathing is a sigh of relief. because all of this could have been so much worse. >> it could have. ron, thank you so much. it's 4 minute after the hour. here is savannah. >> it's election day and two key battles are getting attention this morning. the governor's races in new jersey and virginia. good morning, chuck todd. >> good morning. >> these are races that have significance beyond these states' borders. let's start in new jersey. is chris christie trying to show he's got crossover appeal? >> he's absolutely doing this. they're barely hiding the fact that they hope a big re-election victory for him. no republican has gotten over 50% in the state of virginia since the 80s. he might get over 60. george w. bush in 1998 ran up a big reelection score in texas, did well among hispanics,

african-americans, and the message was, hey, look at me, i can win. i'm electable. that's the message he wants to send in new jersey. he definitely has a national message. >> so he may say i am electable in a general election but he has to get through the republican primary if he is somebody that can prevail in a primary where sometimes the further right the candidate is, that's who the voters like. >> that's the difficult part. he has been talking up things like -- he says i'm a conservative but i'm willing to work across the aisle. he has a general election message down. that's clear. i don't know how he gets through the primary. his supporters will say he's a pro-life governor. we'll see, iowa is a different place than new jersey. >> very quickly, do you think chris christie is the opponent that hilary clinton fears the most? >> democrats fear christie. and some of them are regretting the fact they did not spend this governor's race starting to take a piece out of him. there's been a lot of hand wringing going, what have we done?

we have allowed him to use his friendship with president obama to build himself up. and become this formidable national figure. >> let's talk about virginia. this potentially tells a story larger than within the commonwealth borders. you have a tea party republican candidate that may lose to a democrat in what traditionally had been a republican stronghold. >> there's a lot of anti-tea party republicans. we have chris christie appealing to moderates and look at how that's going in new jersey. you have a tea party that took over the virginia republican party and look at how that's going. virginia republicans could get all three statewide races. they could be swept this year. that's the first time that would have happened since the 80s. there will be a lot of i told you sos on where the split of the republican party is. virginia could be tea party losses and new jersey moderate republicans winning. >> we know you'll be watching if it's tuesday, it's chuck todd. thank you very much. natalie is following an alarming incident at an airport. what can you tell us? >> that's right. we have amazing video to show you.

passengers in montreal were forced to make an emergency exit after a fire broke out on the tarmac. the airplane had just landed at the airport monday afternoon when a luggage loader caught on fire. there were about 250 passengers on board. everyone got out. most using the emergency shoots. several people were treated for minor injuries. >> new details emerging about the suspect gunman accused of the rampage inside the third busiest airport at l.a.x. killing a tsa officer. miguel almaguer has the latest. >> the fbi spent monday at paul ciancia's apartment. after removing boxes of evidence, investigators interviewed the men who lived with the 23-year-old. according to this search warrant, the suspected gunman entered one of their rooms friday unannounced and asked to be driven to l.a.x. federal agents later seize his cell phone left inside this black hyundai.

the alleged gunman's demeanor never tipping off his roommate or police. >> would he have raised the suspicion of a police officer there? probably not. >> reporter: tsa officer hernandez seen here on the job last december was executed by the gunman say police. the first of three tsa officers shot. >> let me take one moment to express the sadness i feel for my heart over the loss of my friend. it has hit me that i will never see him again. >> reporter: in new jersey, paul ciancia's family issued their first public statement through an attorney. >> it's most important for us as a family to express our deep and sincere sympathy to the hernandez family. paul was our son and brother. we'll continue to love him and care for him. >> that was miguel almaguer reporting. a connecticut university was put into lockdown for three

hours monday over a misunderstandi ining over a halloween costume. police were called to central connecticut state university after a student reported seeing a person carrying what looked like a gun or a sword. he was wearing camouflage pants and body armor. police combed the campus for hours before finding the susp t suspect. his father who happens to be a professor at the school said his son had attended an out of town costume party over the weekend and didn't have a change of clothes so he wore his ninja costume back to campus. he was arrested on breach of peace charges. >> we're looking at why justin bieber stormed off stage in brazil. someone in the crowd threw a water bottle at him. he was halfway through his show when the water bottle hits him in the face knocking the microphone out of his hand. the crowd chanted his name for half an hour but he never came back after that. >> an update on the medical condition of the houston texan's coach. nfl.com is reporting that kubiak

suffered what is called a mini stroke, which is a temporary blockage and usually causes no permanent damage to the brain. kubiak is in the hospital and could be released later today. a double dose of bad news for packers fans monday night. not only did they lose to the chicago bears but their star quarterback aaron rogers was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury. happened when rodgers was sacked in the first quarter. left the game and never came back. the packers have not said how serious the injury is. they do plan to run more tests today. and a kentucky basketball player getting attention for his amazing shot during a game monday night. unfortunately, though, he scored it for the opposing team. this happened during an exhibition game. after a blocked shot, you can see the wild cat freshman -- he tried to save the ball but he threw it right back in for two points for them. kentucky, though, still wins this game. so overall, a great job. >> isn't that a 3-pointer?

let's go to kerry sanders at dolphins training camp in south florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. when you think of bullying what first may come to mind is a great school playground where a big boy pushes around or beats up someone smaller but here at dolphins training camp we're talking about men. they're paid to take the field each week and crush the competition and now this morning there are signs this may go beyond bullying. miami guard richie incognito was voted in 2009 the dirtiest player in the nfl. >> on the field, players called me overly aggressive. >> reporter: an imagine he was trying to escape even making light of his public persona in this announcement urging miami fans to behave. >> be respectful and civilized and follow the code of conduct. >> reporter: but even as he remains suspended this morning

amid allegations he bullied his fellow teammate, new allegations surfaced that incognito called martin the "n" word. now multiple sources have heard a voice mail incognito allegedly left for martin in april. a hate filled message that included hey, what's up you half, you're still a rookie. i'll kill you. >> what i want everyone to understand is there's not going to be comments during the course of the investigation until we get all the information and come together on the information. >> reporter: 24-year-old martin left the dolphin's training camp last week after incognito and others allegedly repeatedly and systematically taunted him. adam beasley covers the dolphins for the miami harold. >> the league and out outsiders see it as abuse.

some see him more as a guy trying to toughen up a younger player. >> reporter: neither richie or anyone else responded for comment. >> thank you. a lot of soul searching probably going on in locker rooms right now. >> the whole team has to answer to some of these questions. if they knew what was going on. >> right. >> let's move on to the fast approaching holiday shopping season. for years, black friday, we talked about it all the time, was slowly creeping into thanksgiving. now even more retailers are jumping on the trend. here's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: attention k-mart shoppers. anyone that needs a break from thanksgiving can stop in anymoranymor time. the retailer is planning a shopping blitz from 6:00 a.m. thanksgiving morning until 10:00 p.m. on black friday. sears isn't far behind with it's own all nighter.

doors open at 8:00 p.m. and don't close until 10:00 p.m. friday. stores are opening earlier and staying open longer for one simple reason. they believe people will shop. >> we're a society that likes to spend. so no matter what, consumers will sacrifice to go in and get the best deal possible. it doesn't matter if that deal is coming in june or july or on national holidays such as thanksgiving. >> reporter: even macy's, the company that sponsored the thanksgiving day parade will open it's doors on the holiday for the first time in 155 years, waiting only a few hours after santa passes by the front doors. the pressure from the competition may have been too much. toys "r" us, target, walmart, all opened for business on thanksgiving last year. >> it's bad because it's a family holiday. it's like a business oriented capitalizing thing and it's supposed to be a holiday. >> reporter: for anyone that doesn't want to get in the car, almost every store has online deals that kick off on

thanksgiving as well. but retailers are facing a tough reality. the government shutdown slowed down the economy and took a serious toll on consumer confidence. just over half of shoppers will spend less than last year this christmas season. but there is a risk, the identity of one of the country's most cherished holidays maybe in jeopardy. >> when it comes to thanksgiving, i don't think it's going to be called thanksgiving. it's going to be called thanks for shopping. >> reporter: stephanie gosk in new york. >> people come down on either side of this issue. tamron hall is filling in for carson. what are people saying online? >> we posted a question on our facebook asking people do you think stores should be open on thanksgiving, simple question. the result, 80% of you said no. 20% of you said yes. some of comments people called it sad. feel bad for workers.

good morning. the time 7:26. i'móom jon kelley. yes, it is election day in the bay area. voters getting to decide on several measures including a gun control measure in sunnyvale. this would require gun owners to keep their firearms locked up when they are not in use and register to buy bullets among other things. the nra has threatened to sue if this measure passes. for a full list of the measures go to nbcbayarea.com and search elections. the search for a suspect who led police on a chase in the south bay has been called off. the chase started at fair oaks avenue and central expressway in sunnyvale and then ended when the car crashed off highway 101 in morgan hill.

♪ we're back now at 7:30 on a tuesday morning, it's the 5th day of november, 2013. incredible images. this is the view of the midair collision. two skydiving planes captured by the divers themselves. cameras so many people use these days when they are skiing and surfing and, yes, sky diving. these imagines tell a remarkable and frightening story. we're going to talk to the skydivers involved in a moment. i'm matt lauer with savannah guthrie, al roker and natalie morales. >> good morning. here's what's making headlines this morning. a gunman opened fire in new jersey's largest mall leading to a lockdown that lasted all night. police swept the building and eventually found the shooter

dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. no one else was injured. >> two of the big battles you should be watching, the governor's race in virginia and new jersey. and take a look at this. passengers forced to evacuate from a plane at montreal's airport when the baggage conveyer unloading the baggage suddenly caught fire. and this morning, we have more from michelle knight as she shares disturbing aspects of her decade in captivity. what she would say to ariel castro that may have saved her life. and new tips for all of you, just in time for the holidays. this company, ebay promising one hour delivery from the time you place your order. >> how are they going to do that? let's begin this half hour with the incredible story of survival we've been following after two planes collided midair. the skydivers are with us live but first the chilly video of the crash licensed exclusively by nbc news. >> reporter: some of the

skydivers take their position outside the trailing plane for their final jump of the day when disaster strikes. [ bleep ] [ bleep ] the two cessnas collide in midair. some of the jumpers slammed between the two planes. the wing of the lead plane bends around one of the jumpers and then breaks off. from a different camera you can see other jumpers getting sucked out into a free-fall. at 120 miles per hour, 12,000 feet in the air. one jumper literally turning his head to see a massive fireball engulf one of the planes. flaming debris flying through the air around them. another parachutest watching as the remaining piece of the plane breaks up. somehow, the pilot of that plane manages to escape and jump out. in these videos, licensed by nbc news, the divers race to deploy

their shoots not knowing if their friends have survived. the first jumper to land starts counting the number of parachutes he can see to count the crash's survivors. >> how many do we have? >> one, two. we're good. we got everybody. >> reporter: then they reunite on the ground. >> tell him to wait for me. hey, hey. >> reporter: racing to find the others. >> come on boys, you got it. >> reporter: and cheering as the second plane lands safely. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: all nine jumpers and two pilots safe on the ground. an ending that, just moments before, seemed totally impossible. every one of the nine sky divers managed to walk away alive. they are with us now. from one plane is trisha daniel and share a and amy and chad.

from the other plane, john and mike and barry and lanaia. nice to have you guys here. good morning. >> thank you. >> raise your hand if you're happy to be alive this morning. it's incredible. let me start with you patricia. you were about to get out of the following plane. the one that is above and slightly to the left. you were about to get out where two of the other sky divers are already perched on the platform and you're rolling with your helmet cam. what was it like? what did you think when you saw this plane getting close to you? >> i think it -- it was so slow at the time. it seemed like it's getting closer, closer, closer and then all of a sudden it kicked clicked, like this is too close. >> and the impact? >> yeah. the impact i think just threw me back. >> dan, you were on the perch, you had already gotten out of the plane and you said, you know what happened to me, i got hit by a moving plane. you actually got wedged between those two planes. >> yeah. yeah. it was unpleasant. >> what did it feel like? and how much time did you have

to react? >> i had no time to react. all i heard was trish scream horrifically and i had enough time to look over my shoulder and see white, which wasn't right, and then get pinned. >> let's not forget, there are spinning propellors here. you heard them close to you. >> the sound behind me. i'll never forget. all i could do is try and stay forward. >> that is you right there isn't it? >> yeah. >> that's you getting knocked off the plane trying to hang on thinking you might get cut in half by one of those propellors. sarah, you were on the search as well. from your vantage point what did you see? >> i thought it was a joke and not a funny one and not at all appropriate but it was surreal. there was no thought process that was going through any head other than, oh, my god, we're actually getting close and i thought they were going to peel away. >> you get knocked by the impact

further, andy. you're on that plane. did you see the fireball? >> yes. >> and you could hear the screaming of your fellow skydivers? >> yeah. >> what did the pilot say? >> he told us to go. >> get out? >> go. >> he screamed go really loud. >> you could see what is happening to the other plane. you saw the wings come off the other plane. you couldn't see as much because you were down below. you couldn't see the two planes getting close together. what did you hear? >> a loud bang and knocked off. >> who got knocked off the platform? >> all of us. >> you were already outside the plane? so all four of you were ready to jump? here comes the impact, you go flying. >> we didn't each -- even wait for the count. >> did you see the wings come off of your plane? >> yeah. >> as soon as i got knocked off, i was back to earth and i just saw the big burst of flames and the wing go.

>> you have a pilot on your plane. >> the wings have come off. there's a fire ball because of the gasoline in the wing tank. you had to be incredibly concerned for his safety. he's not with you, by the way. you had to be incredibly concerned for his safety. barry, did you try to actually chase that plane? >> yeah, i watched the plane blow up in flames and i knew the pilot was still in there. everybody else had parachutes on so they were kind of on their own. so i chased the plane and dan did too. he came down with me. we chased the airplane to see if the pilot got out. >> in a free-fall? >> yeah. >> under canopy. >> yeah. >> so you're free-falling trying to stay up to the plane. >> dan said he got up to 210 miles per hour. once i saw him bail out, i chased him to make sure he would open his parachute because he was a student. we actually did end up passing him where he is now self-supervised zone by himself.

>> when you look at these videos, guys, all of you, do you see things that you actually don't remember from the event? >> yeah. i remember seeing sarah get hit but i don't remember dan on the strut of the plane and it's ironi ironic, because that is the bulk of the footage from my camera. >> i see my hand get stuck but i don't see -- >> hand stuck between two planes? >> yeah. i mean, my shoulder hurts but i don't see -- i should have a broken pelvis watching that. >> you should have a broken pelvis. >> yeah, i mean. >> we started this segment by asking for you to raise your hands if you're lucky to be alive or happy to be alive. raise your hands now if you'll get back in a plane and skydive again. really? >> not as soon as everybody else. really in no hesitation about that? >> it's just a part of who we are. >> i'm more terrified of spiders. >> it's true. >> we don't have that quite alarming video of spiders as we do this. guys, thank you for being with us. i really appreciate it.

little while. >> 140 characters or less. >> exactly. >> first let's get inside to natalie with a check of the top stories. good morning. >> good morning to you all once again. some terrifying moments for shoppers at a new jersey mall on monday night after a gunman opened fire just before closing time. ron allen is in paramus, new jersey with more. good morning. >> good morning. an incredible scene here last night. it's quite now but police are going through every inch of this mall. thousands of shoppers here. a gunman walked in at 9:20 just before closing and opened fire without any kind of warning. police identified the man as 20-year-old richard shoop from a nearby town here. unemployed. he does have a history of drug abuse but they're not sure what his motive was last night. he fired a long rifle about six times. witnesses say he was dressed in black wearing a motorcycle helmet and although he did have the opportunity to shoot at people, police said he fired into the air for the most part and no one else was injured.

he disappeared into the mall. police discovered his body about six hours later. he died from a self-inflicted wound. the good news is the situation could have been a lot worse. no one else was injured. a situation that escalated through the night. lasted for about six hours but no one else was injured. the man took his own life. his motive unknown. >> well, ron, thanks so much. a police s.w.a.t. team was called to a denver middle school after a janitor reported seeing what appeared to be two mens inside with rifles and a backpack. the suspects, in fact juveniles, surrendered. the backpack held what appeared to be a computer. >> governor's races in two states are being watched as possible gauges of the nation's political mood. the virginia race puts clinton friend mcauliffe against ken

cuccinelli and in new jersey chris christie is running. they're also electing in new york city, miami, boston, and seattle. richie incognito allegedly used a racial slur against the teammate he was bullying. multiple sources heard a voice mail that he left for jonathan martin where a racial slur was used. he left dolphins camp after incognito and others taunted him repeatedly and systematically. either incognito or his bit wilder than usual on monday in evergreen, colorado. a group of young elk wandered into a backyard that had an enclose trampoline. one jumped on board and needed help when it was time to leave. looks like they made it free and

parachute. the other plane was damaged but able to fly. the pilot of that plane, maintained his calm. >> you got it. >> and landed the aircraft. >> now that pilot's name is blake. he's with us along with three of his passengers. amy oleson and patricia roy and dan chandler. good morning to you. how are you doing? >> good all things considered. >> a little shaken up? >> calm down. >> calm now? now had a very quick choice to make, blake. impact occurs and you have to decide whether that plane is flyable and landable. what did you go through in the air to try to make that determinati determination? >> i had to look at all of my control surfaces and make sure they were there and they were there so i knew i could fly it. >> did you have any reason to

believe something was wrong prior to the impact? was there anything strange about the flight? was there anything strange about the plane? >> no. no. everything was exactly as it should have been. >> and as you are checking your control surfaces as you just said trying to figure out whether you could land that aircraft, you're also in the process of trying to count parachutes. >> yes. >> looking at the horizon. looking around you. talk to me a little bit about that. >> well, for the first i guess roughly 45 to 50 seconds or however long they were in freefall i couldn't find anybody because you can't find people in free fall so once the parachute started opening up that's when i could finally try and pick people out. >> you're counting. you need nine skydivers and you're also looking for the shoot of the other pilot. >> right. >> did you see him come out of the plane? >> no. >> never did. but you saw the shoot finally? >> yes. >> you're a pilot as well, aren't you? what do you think he might have been going through.

he might be too modest to talk about what it might take to maintain calm and control of the airplane. what did you see? >> it's part of the initial flight training but for all of my pilots, the reason we do the training we do where i talk to him about the possibilities of these things happening and we go through these procedures, it's the first time we ever had to consider losing these and thank god for pilot shoots. >> you say thank god for pilot shoots. i did not know that the pilots are required to wear a parachute in a situation like this. that saved the other pilot's life. >> he did a fantastic job. >> you talk about hearing blake screaming get out, get out and it's still emotional for you. >> that's probably the worst. hearing him scream.

it's pretty rough. >> talk about the landing, all right? you're in this plane, it's damaged. talk to me about the damage on the plane? >> as far as i could see there, my propeller was bent but looking at it now afterwards, there's a lot more damage than i thought. >> so you don't have thrust really. you can't throttle up. >> no, it was all the way down. at least i have that though. >> and patricia, you were one of the people there watching the landing hoping that that plane was able to be landed. >> right. >> what were you thoughts as you watched blake coming in? >> originally i assumed blake was dead because we didn't hear the plane. normally it's pretty loud and i didn't hear it. >> because it was idle. >> or maybe just because -- >> right. but when you saw him coming at the runway you already gathered there? >> yeah. it was like he's alive.

>> yeah, you can hear someone saying come on blake. come on blake. and when the wheels touch -- can i tell you, that was a pretty good landing for somebody in a fully operational plane and considering the plane was banged up, how did you feel about it? >> it's kind of a joke now. that was actually one of my better landings. >> given the circumstances. i mentioned i asked all of these people whether they had any desire to go up and do that again. will you get back in a plane? is it that easy? >> i will, yeah. absolutely. >> what do you want people to take away from this, dan? people watching this, first of all, may not understand what you guys do for fun anyway. but then what do you want them to take away from what they see here and what the outcome was? >> don't be afraid to do this. it's ten times more dangerous to ride your motorcycle or drive a

car. it's very few skydivers injured or killed in a year. it's safe and we train for this. nobody should be afraid to get up there and do this. we're in a plane and prepared to get out. pilots have parachutes. it happens. >> the only difference is if you're in a car, you can have what would be a fender bender. fender benders in moving aircraft take on a whole different importance. >> and it's important to remember that there are incidents that have happened very recently where the jumpers weren't lucky enough to walk away and we are thankful that we did survive and we wish our skydiving community all the safety that we had. all the luck we had. >> you have quite a story to tell guys. thank you very much. good to have you back on solid ground, blake. pleasure talking to you. and you can see more of the dramatic video on our website today.com and we'll speak to the other pilot involved as part of an upcoming dateline special. let's go to savannah.

now the our special series "choosing adoption." as we mark national adoption month. kate snow walks us through the challenges and the potential pit falls of the process. good morning to you. >> good morning. so my husband is adopted. a lot of people in my family have adopted children. it's a wonderful, glorious thing. but but idon'tionb can filled with emotional ups and downs and we asked one family outside of chicago to tell us their story and shed some light on the heartache and the joy. when theresa and rick meyer married they were so sure they'd become parents they started a college fund before even getting pregnant. >> we both came from big families so to say that we wanted a big family, we wondered if that was in the cards. >> but it didn't happen. they tried ivf with no success. and then about five years ago they made the decision to adopt. but it wasn't what they expected.

>> you might as well bring the cameras, bring them in the bedroom, bring them in the house. you know? you are giving out that information. >> paperwork, then home visits, finger prints, background checks. their lives became an open book. literally. they made this photo book for prospective birth parents. >> you're marketing yourself. >> this is a dear birth letter. >> they compare it to making a profile for a dating website. >> we would get a phone call and they would say that, okay, you're one of four -- they picked you. they picked three other families too. >> that's not an uncommon experience. more than two million families are actively seeking to adopt. adoption expert chuck johnson says many parents spend more time researching plumbers than the adoption agency they'll choose, which can lead to problems. >> we're all aware and more increasingly more aware of the

potential scams or of countries closing the international adoption or of parents changing their mind. >> a mother sent them ultrasound pictures of the baby they wanted, but a few weeks later the birth mother had changed her mind. her legal right. >> i was getting disappointed. i was sort of at the end of my rope. >> after five years and thousands of dollars they were done. now thinking about using their nonexistent child's fund for a big vacation. but then, one phone call changed everything. michael is almost 2 now. after waiting years, it took just three weeks and they had their baby. >> after all the paperwork and the delays and the wait, that moment when they handed you your son. >> everything we wanted, everything we worked for and just in he was.

>> it didn't matter whether we had our own child, whether we adopted a child, but to be able to raise a child as your own, i watch him do everything for the first time. it's -- that's it. i mean, that's -- that's what it's all about. >> yay. >> so important to remember that it can be a fulfilling ending to the story. the miieriers were dealing witha domestic adoption and that can cost up to $25,000. adopting out of foster care can be a lot less expensive, but often a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy. that can take a couple of years and for international adoption, wait times can range from a year and half up to six years. >> wow. >> we are talking up to 50,000 dollars for an international adoption. >> i remember the story you did a while ago it disturbed a lot of people. people who had adopted and then

didn't get the support they needed and had to go online and look for another home. a story you did with reuters. >> right, it was a partnership with reuters, in september. we got so much reaction there are congressional hearings that will be held about the issue. there are governments like china changing their rules and policies on adoption because of the reporting we did. but the bottom line is that everyone is saying, there's a new report out in the adoption institute saying parents need support. once you adopt a kid, that's the first step. but then there's a lifetime ahead of you and you need support. >> obviously people have to do their homework and what other tips would you give them? >> one, choose one agency. don't sort of try lots of different agencies and ways to go about adoption. choose one, and do your homework, make sure they're reputable. tell your friends. tell everyone you're trying to adopt because often it's word of mouth that leads you to the phone call. finally, keep your mind on the end goal. it's what they have with michael. that's the end goal, right?

you the question how do you stay so slim. >> it's the first question out of people's mouths. >> because you work with food. >> so they don't understand how can i eat all of this food and then stay trim so i have given my secrets out in the new book. >> in one book. >> great. we're making it a little different than what i'm used to. >> i hear you're a fan. >> i love it. okay. talk about ingredients. there's a lot of them. >> there's a lot of ingredients in a one-pot meal and it's usually made with rice but it's also made with noodles. people don't know that. i revamped it and made it lighter took out the sausage and did chicken, clams and shrimp. you can put whatever seafood and meat you like. break it up and it's the spices that make it traditional. >> all right. you have done your cutting in advance. >> a little help here. a little olive oil.

not much. nutritional break downs in all the recipes this time and it's interesting how much olive oil and salt i had to take out of my food. >> you were adding some calories and fat? >> yes. i love it. i think olive oil is great but when the nutritionist goes through it she says too much. >> clam juice and tomatoes. >> these are canned tomatoes. >> yeah. so a lot of the stuff you can have in your pantry and this can take 30 minutes to make. so bay leaf and smoked paprika and saffron and then what we do is we cook the spaghetti that you break up and your kids with break that up and they let that cook for 8 to 9 minutes. >> all right. >> over here -- >> you have your brown chicken here. chicken goes in first? >> chicken goes in first. brown the chicken first and leave it out until the pasta is

cooked. >> okay. >> this is always tricky. clams and shrimp in and then you just put the lid on and let it cook for about five minutes. >> that's all it takes? >> yes. and this is what you've got. how good does that look? >> it looks good. so the only thing that's missing out of this is the crisp from the bottom of a traditional paella. >> it has the flavor, even a little bit more flavorful than a traditional paella. i like the pasta. >> it's good, right? >> and you serve that with a salad? ar ar arugula and croutons and a pear. >> i'll go back to the book. you say it's more personal. you also talk about family a little bit and you talk about the contents of your purse. what is that all about? >> you know what, a lot of

people have also asked me what do i carry in my purse. >> guys don't get it. >> no, but women do. they want to know what tricks do you do every day. a spray bottle to keep myself hydrated. i have a little coloring book for my daughter i have sharpies in case i have to sign anything. certain lip balm and tricks for the trade that keep a woman growing. >> although the recipes in here are healthier and leaner this is not a diet book. >> this is not a diet book. i don't believe in diets. so i have a month's worth of meals but it's not to lose weight. there's vegan, dairy-free and gluten free as well as meat. a little bit of everything. >> there you go. we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc.

unbelievable. if you haven't seen it yet, this is a mid-air collision over the weekend in wisconsin. it was caught on the helmet cams. good news everybody is okay. somehow, some way. two planes carrying a group of nine skydivers crash in mid-air as they were getting ready to jump. one of the planes as you see in the video plummets to the ground on fire. >> watch the wing come up and traps those two. >> yeah, it clipped the wing off of the one plane. >> of all the incredible things that happened in this video, the most amazing is that the pilot of the plane, he pulled the emergency shoot and he gets out of the plane and lands safely. incredible. the other plane was damaged, still able to fly and with a damaged aircraft, that pilot maintained his calm and stuck the landing on the plane. it was funny listening to him talk to matt and he said it was actually one of my better landings.

cgi. this is real. >> this is real. >> it's all real. the other thing what's so amazing now with these go-pro cameras that we can see this stuff now. >> the one guy actually turns around and looks back and you get the view of all the flames and the debris that they're flying -- that they're basically plummeting to the earth, all of that is falling right around them. >> and the folks on the ground were counting shoots to make sure they had nine shoots. >> a lot of experienced people doing the right thing in a moment of crisis. >> thank goodness for that experience. >> unbelievable. there's an ugly story in the world of sports today. this is bigger than sports. this is about bullying. >> this goes beyond bullying. this is threatening. >> yes. let's explain it a little bit. miami dolphins guard, a guy named richie incognito is suspended amid allegations he bullied fellow teammate jonathan martin. he usualed racially charged language against martin.

multiple sources heard these voice mails left for him in april. one including a death threat. >> it said i'll kill you on that voi voicemail apparently. >> yeah and there's ugly racial language on there. >> "n" word. >> yes, among other things. martin left the training camp last week and the head coach said he would not comment. neither incognito nor his representatives responded to request for comments. he did tweet earlier in the week shame on you for attaching my name to false speculation. i won't be holding my breath for an apology. but since then the voicemails have come out. if they are incognito. >> it's a mountain of evidence. >> i'd be shocked if he played in the nfl again. >> yeah and also seems like in some way or form, the team as a whole, i think, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered if there was more going on because there had been allegations and reports of

hazing to the point of, you know, players forcing the rookies to pay for lavish dinners. >> a lot of money. >> like $30,000 dinners when these are guys making about $400,000 a year. and if that's the case, that's one form of hazing but then it crossing the line into bullying and even more, threatening. >> yes. it's worse. >> it goes to show you that bullying comes in all shapes and sizes. doesn't matter if you're a 300 pound man playing in the nfl. in all forms. >> and the culture that permeates professional sports. i'm not trying to indict anybody but are the miami dolphins isolated in this activity? >> that's the right point. martin was a rookie when this started. rookies are hazed as a manner of tradition. there's a behind the scenes show on hbo where they tape the rookies to the goal posts and make them carey the bags. these the pranks but it goes beyond that. >> we did that to you. >> it went on for months.

>> the hazing starts now. we shouldn't even joke about it. >> we take willie to my weather map. >> still, almost a year in. but you do wonder where's the leadership whether it's the coaching staff or the captains of the team to say guys enough is enough. you want to tape him to the goal post and everybody is around and we're laughing about it, but maybe. >> but the incident in the cafeteria which is when martin got up and left and said i can't take it anymore and it took an emotional break, psychological break but it sounds like all the players, the allegations are left him sitting by himself. it sounds like high school over again. >> yeah. >> it's pathetic and really i think outrageous. >> these are a couple of quotes to sports illustrated from people that work in the nfl in front offices. one of them said i think jonathan martin is a weak person. richie incognito did offend him racially. if he did, that's something you have to handle as a man.

>> i'm going with the flatware storage situation. >> it's the ice and water dispenser. a lot of us don't think about cleaning it but a study found there's mold in there and yeast in there so be good about cleaning that. you want to clean the spout. get in there with a q-tip and dry cloth. >> you can put a little solution in there also but you can just clean it -- just do it on a regular basis like once a week. but i wonder how many people have ever done this. >> never. >> never ever. but definitely clean that spout once a week. when it comes to the ice tray, once a month. get in there with soap and water. dry it completely before you put it back in there and then you actually once a year or twice a year, think daylight saving time, run distilled white vinegar through the tube that goes from your sink in. >> i think have to do that when i get home today. >> it's worth it.

the fact of the matter is sometimes people are like, okay. it's december 15th. let me get started when in reality you should be starting now because there's an abundance of jobs available. we're talking 70,000 new jobs between amazon and target. 50% of bloomingdale's, macy's, their stock sin creasing. there's a lot of opportunities. this time only comes one a year. do it. >> as you mentioned, retail, no surprise there, really leading the way. >> absolutely. yeah, no there's 3,000 new jobs and they're not asking for retail experience. they're looking for a great personality. get down there. >> retail leading the way but what about food and restaurant industries as well? >> yeah. anything where people are using the service over the course of the holiday season. people are going out dining with families, friends, work parties, or any of those kinds of industries you want to hit. >> service industries. >> service industries. >> how long do these jobs last

typically? how long can i expect to be working? >> well, this is the thing. i think and you mentioned it in the opening, think about this opportunity in terms of what's the long-term potential. think about it. do your research. understand who this company is and make a choice. you know, decide where you might want to land. companies like toys "r" us, literally 15% of their staff last year ended up staying on through the new year. so there is long-term opportunity. think of it as an audition. you get to go in. you make a great impression and ideally they won't want to let you go. >> we'll talk about also shipping in warehouses. they need to handle all of the demands. >> 55,000 new jobs. yeah, ups is hiring. so no, absolutely. those are the kind of jobs. anything from wepackaging to frt of door delivery.

>> one interesting thing you pointed out. create your own freelance job. what does that mean? >> it's like how busy are you in terms of addressing holiday cards, baking for your kids holiday special party, you know, it's like so go around your community, put a little ad out and say i'm willing to baby sit and wrap gifts and these jobs frankly end up being more than what your minimum wage job would be. think about what might be available out and around in your community. >> so now that we know where the jobs are, let's talk about how you can maybe hopefully keep those jobs. so first off, do you accept any position that comes your way? or how picky can you get? >> i think you can be relatively picky when you're looking at this job influx. there's a lot of opportunity here. you go on linkedin. you follow the company and see who you might be connected with so you can ask is this a good company to work for. i want y to think about this as a long-term opportunity. you don't want to waste this by taking anything.

i think you can be strategic and smart about your choice. >> i love what you said about the way you can apply for your job. a lot of people go online and you say go in person to apply for the job. >> go in person. so many of the jobs were front facing, consumer personal jobs. you want to put your personality out there. one of my great tricks is to go dine at that restaurant. go shop in that store and not busy hours so that you have an opportunity to hand your resume off to a manager of the store. just something like that so you can make a great impression. >> are these jobs available now. >> yes, now. >> ready to go. >> go now. >> nicole williams. good stuff. >> my pleasure. >> coming up next, hope to it. we'll introduce you to a special group of che

over time took over. >> did you take the bar exam? >> no. you only take the bar -- i got my degree but you only take the bar if you're going to practice law. >> well how did your parents feel about all that -- >> no, no, no. they had always reinforced to me -- >> they weren't mad privately mad. they always told me that there was nothing i couldn't do. >> okay. >> nothing i couldn't achieve. whatever is in your heart go for it. >> that's great. >> i followed their advice. >> did it take you a while to get traction in the acting world? >> you know what, i was really fortunate, spike lee gave me my first break, put me in a movie called "get on the bus" with ozzy davis and charles dutton. >> wow. >> ozzy is amazing, right? >> that started me off. i credit spike lee. he put me in another movie called "he got game" and helped my career at the beginning. >> now you've been on lots of great shows and you always seem to be some sort of a law officer

or some sort of thing. this is a -- >> solving crime. >> solving crime. but this time you get to travel the world. >> yes. >> that's cool. >> you know, wherever the story line goes in "covert affairs" you pick up and go. >> that's what makes "covert affairs" so special. having done "csi" for nine years in a lab the whole time it's nice to be on a show where we go everywhere. the first season we go to columbia, frankfurt, copenhagen, final two episodes are set in hong kong, amazing episodes. three episodes left of the season and couldn't be more excited. >> it seemed like it would be so pricey of course everyone is trying to cut costs but that's not the case when you travel overseas. >> when we go overseas, they've been doing it a while, i just joined the show this year, but they have it down to a science and they take a pretty skeleton crew. >> right. >> they hire a lot of local crew. >> which is great for the local economy. >> awesome. and it's good. it's great. >> we mentioned at the top you're a "new york times" best-selling author. what kind of books do you write?

>> nonfiction motivational books. today my fifth and final book is coming out. >> final? >> why do you say final? >> this is it. this is it. no. >> never say never, nothing you can't do. >> just like jay-z i'm dropping the mike and walking off. that's it. >> you are not. >> i put everything i have. this is a motivational book for the incarcerated individuals and their family and any people in type of a prison whether it be a job that's got them stuck, death that's got them stuck, and i couldn't be more proud of this book. by far the best book i've written and that's it. this is it. >> i don't think so. >> you're going to come back in five years with a book. >> no, i'm not. i'm coming in right now with a book. i have two book for the guests. this is for both of you. >> that's a great cover. that's great "letters to an incarcerated brother". >> thank you so much. >> great to meet you. >> she got it right. terrific. thank you so much. give our love to piper. we're crazy about her. >> she's the best. >> i love her. >> she's a doll.

reason or another. i did because my job was changing, the economy was tanking, friends were losing jobs, and on top of that, there was all this new technology coming at me and social media and i did not want to adapt or adopt any of it. >> your daughter kind of ignited this change. >> gave you a kick in the you know what. >> she happens to be here. >> anyway, what did she do that changed things for you? >> she came home from l.a., she was living in l.a. and she came home and said what the heck is wrong with you? >> right. >> i know you, mom, and this is not you. >> yeah. >> she said you've got to do something. i'm like what am i going to do? she said, you know, you need some kind of creative outlet. why don't you blog. at that time i'm like, what's a blog? >> yeah, right. >> she said, just write about something. and she really pestered me about it. finally i said all right. what if i do something new once a week. she said oh, that's a fabulous idea if you do it every day. >> for a solid year. >> for a year. >> we mentioned some of the

things you did which are crazy, the zip lining, the scorpion, the plunge. tell us about some of the things you enjoyed. >> well the polar bear plunge was really big and symbolic. oh, this is zip lining. that was the first time i ever zip lined. >> were you terrified, by the way is it? >> i was but at this point of the year i was used to jumping in and going. >> you had survived a lot at that point? >> right. that's the thing, when you start doing things like this. >> did you ever regret any of the things you did? >> i regretted my eat dessert all day day. >> oh. >> i thought that was going to be fabulous. >> and -- >> unfortunate bathing suit he just had on. >> i don't know that guy. >> not anymore, you don't. >> honey, you took the plunge with him if you know what i'm saying. >> he pulled me out of the water. i thank you. >> what was the takeaway from this kind of thing? for you? >> i realized you really do have to dare yourself. you have to push yourself out of your normal box. and -- >> your comfort zone.

>> yes. when you're stuck you start saying no to a lot of things and go inside. >> yeah. >> when you start doing new things, your whole life starts opening up again to possibilities. >> so how did it change you going forward? i know you don't do something new every day anymore. >> i still do new things. the other day i know this -- oh, that's the mud run there. >> yeah. >> i don't do that every day. >> yeah. >> but the other day i did a power -- my first power point presentation. >> oh. >> i know that doesn't sound huge but for me that was big to talk and click at the same time. >> yeah. >> right. >> you also have been to the point where you why could probably say to yourself, if i can do that then i can do this. >> what else. >> that is exactly what happens. and one first leads to another and you gain confidence so you do the big things. i went back to school. i started teaching. >> did you start tweeting? >> i started tweeting. >> of course you did. >> stop it. >> i'm going to be tweeting about you guys. >> well, we -- >> congratulations. >> we're happy for you. the book is terrific. really inspirational. >> all the best to you. >> el divo performance for us.

good morning. thanks for being with us. i'm marla tellez. i'm jon kelley. new at 11:00. we can tell you an 86 yeshld marathon runner from the south bay died after finishing that new york marathon this past weekend. her family says during the marathon she fell and hit her head. she thought she was fine, and then suddenly yesterday she passed away. nbc bay area's christie smith is live right now in the willow glen neighborhood in san jose where she has just spoken to that woman's family. what a tragic, tragic day. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, jon. certainly joye johnson's family is grieving this morning, but they're also sharing a story of an amazing 86-year-old woman.
